St. Augustine’s: HAF Funded Adventure Activity Day

Prior to booking please read the below:

Following a similar format of our popular Wild Activity Days, these days are for children aged 8-14 years; who are eligible for benefit related free school meals. We will collect children at 11.15am from St. Augustine’s Catholic Primary School, Gunnergate Lane, Coulby Newham, returning them at 5.15pm to the same location. The children will be engaged in outdoor adventure sports, including archery, axe throwing, rifle shooting and bushcraft.

Please note: staff from St. Augustine’s will not be available to meet you, please stay with your child until Rewilding has collected them, so we can ensure we have all the details needed prior to them coming with us for the day. Also, your child is still welcome to attend even if they are not a pupils of the school, we are using the school as a collection point, and as such offer places to the pupils there.

‘School holidays can be particular pressure points for some families because of increased costs (such as food and childcare); this leads to a holiday experience gap – with children from disadvantaged families less likely to access organised out-of-school activities; more likely to experience ‘unhealthy holidays’ in terms of nutrition and physical health and are more likely to experience social isolation.

Free holiday clubs are a response to this issue and evidence suggests that they can have a positive impact on children and young people. It also shows they work best when they provide consistent and easily accessible enrichment activities, when they offer more than just breakfast or lunch, and when they involve children in food preparation’ (Department for Education, 2021).

These places are fully funded for children who receive benefits-related free school meals (see the link above for which benefits are included). Upon booking please indicate which school your child attends and your home postcode- these will be used to confirm eligibility by the local authority. If you have a child in your home who is eligible for free schools meals, and another who isn’t, then they are welcome to attend as 15% of places can be used as such- these are possibly for foster-siblings.

Included within these days is healthy food, including a breakfast upon arrival, fruit and snacks during the day and lunch we will cook as part of the activities. Please notify us of any allergies/intolerances, or dietary needs upon booking.

Please discuss with your child the need to maintain social distance, and if possible, please provide them with anti-bacterial hand gel (the hot tap doesn’t work in the woods…); we will also have hand gel available.

The places are equally funded for Redcar & Cleveland and Middlesbrough boroughs; if you live outside of these areas, then unfortunately we are unable to welcome you on these days (but there will be provision in your local authority area, as funding has been made available for every council in the UK)
