NAVIGATION & NNAS

Although there are GPS systems widely available, even on our hand-held phones, we still need to rely on a traditional map and compass.

By doing so we will be able to confidently and safely enjoy the great outdoors, including the hills and moorland of the North York Moors National Parks, as well as the remote areas and mountains across the UK.

Navigation can be skill learned young, or something that you can come to later in life- that’s why we offer something for everyone.

There is the option of individual navigation coaching, but the most popular courses are the various National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) courses we offer.

Navigation & NNAS Courses | Rewilding Adventure

Young Navigator NNAS Star Awards

These are aimed at the young adventurer who wants to be introduced to the concepts of maps, orientating the map, route planning and walking simple routes.

There are three levels we offer: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each level builds on the one before it, with increasing use of skills and navigational ability.

Hill & Mountain Walking Skills | Rewilding Adventure

Bronze NNAS course in the North York Moors

Run by one of our experienced and passionate Mountain Leaders, this is a two day programme typically offered on a weekend, or one day per week for two weeks.

On day one, we will meet indoors and introduce you to maps and define navigation. We will then get our boots on and explore the local paths and routes, whilst ensuring you are coached through the Bronze NNAS syllabus.

On day two, we will meet at a different location and head off to complete the syllabus and develop your navigation further.

Included within this course is a Leave No Trace Awareness workshop, that extends the Countryside Code element of the NNAS syllabus – from which you will receive an additional certificate.

This is aimed at teenagers, families, aspiring outdoor leaders and anyone else who is wishing to gain a formally recognised benchmark of navigational ability. All maps and compasses are provided.
