What’re Rewilding Adventure doing at Raithwaite Estate?

Rewilding Adventure are pleased to partner with Raithwaite Estate to utilize the woodland of the estate grounds, where we have established a camp, as well as archery, axe throwing and rifle shooting ranges.
Whether you’re staying at the hotel, holidaying near-by or live locally- you’ll be welcomed to all of the activities we are hosting!

What’s Happening?

Basically, Rewilding will be hosting an Adventure Activity Day for children and young people aged between 8 and 14 years on Wednesdays during the school holidays, and three 90-minute family sessions on Thursday- doing bushcraft, axe throwing and then archery!

  • Adventure Activity Day: open to children and young people aged 8-14 years, we will meet at 10am, say farewell to parents who have freedom for the day- and venture to our established camp. They will spend the day doing bushcraft- probably lighting the campfire, maybe building a den- we may shoot some arrows or throw some tomahawks- but will certainly toast some marshmallows! We will return at 4pm, full of fresh air and fun, having made memories! Incidentally- these times coincide with the Spa opening times… Children will need a packed lunch, and clothes/footwear they can get mucky in. The cost per day is £34 per child- less than £6 per hour, amazing adventure childcare!
  • Family Bushcraft: 90 minutes of family orientated bushcraft. We’ll shortly before 10am near the main entrance of the hotel, then head up to our established camp on the Estate grounds. We will look at different ways of creating fire, possibly making a shelter and cooking a snack,. All ages welcome- children under 3 come free. These sessions cost £15 per person.
  • Family Axe Throwing: a ninety minute axe throwing session for families to come and enjoy together. If you’re staying on the Estate, are visiting the Whitby area for the summer or live locally- we’d love you to join us for this surprisingly therapeutic and enjoyable target sport! Following an introduction and demonstration- you’ll soon be throwing the tomahawks- there is also some smaller mousehawks for suitable for children 5 years. These sessions cost £15 per person.
  • Family Archery: following an introduction and demonstration of the ancient skills of archery- you’ll soon be shooting arrows- once you have got your aim, we will play some games! Suitable for children from 5 years, with teenage and adult bows also available- who will you be: Robin Hood; Legolas or Katniss Everdeen? These sessions cost £15 per person.

As I write this Bonfire Night is coming to an end; there is the occasional whistle and pop outside as the last of the fireworks are let off. It’s just over a week since the clocks went back, so it’s dark by 4.45pm. In 6 weeks it’ll be the Winter Solstice- the shortest day and…

  • Campfire Cree Bannock

During last week’s Home Educators’ Forest School session we made a couple of bannocks; bannock sounds as if it has a Scottish heritage- indeed, a quick piece of research suggests that the word itself has a translation of morsel in Gaelic. Without the time for detailed research I’ll leave it at that… Safe to say, bannock is something…

  • So what’s Rewilding…?

Rewilding. There’s a lot in that! It isn’t just a name we chucked in to give ourselves a title; rather, it’s months of thinking and consideration of why we do what we do- what the values of the business are and the philosophy behind our practice. Rewilding has different meanings in different contexts. It is…
